Will There Be No More Disabled Children Born In The Future?

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has been covered under Germany’s public health insurance since 2022 if another prenatal test shows abnormalities or the pregnant person’s “personal situation” justifies it. These tests can detect some congenital conditions, and in countries where they are broadly available, far fewer children with certain disabilities are being born. In Denmark, 95% of all pregnant people who detect trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) choose to terminate. Advocates are concerned about the risk profile; lack of medical benefit of the tests; and society’s ableism, hostility, and lack of support for people with disabilities.
